First off, wow, I just got a notification saying I've posted 2000 times...

Anyways, I remember last summer I saw a barge doing some kind of dredging project while on my kayak in Southbay. I honestly forgot about it and from the water it looks like just a line of sand just barely sticking out from the surface. I was just on Google Earth looking at underwater structure and stuff and it appears their satellite imaging has been updated since there is no longer a 1992 dually in our driveway that we sold 10 years ago. I noticed what appears to be a pretty well vegetated island in Southbay that has little deltas and stuff on it. Looks completely different from a bird's eye view. Anyone know what it is or have any information? It looks pretty cool. I'll definitely have to check it out in a couple weeks once school's out. I wonder if I could beach there? You guys can check it out for yourselves and get a better look on Google Earth. IMG_0574.PNG IMG_0575.PNG IMG_0576.PNG

Looks like a prime example of accumulation of sediment surrounding the area coming down stream from the river. If they didnt dredge those areas, there would be sandbar peaking out of the bay. Wouldn' t that look weird in the bay? Haha

It's not like it slowly built up. It wasn't here early last summer. Some barges just showed up with a shytload of sand and rocks and were dredging out mud from the channel into the marina in Chula Vista and then they just started dumping. From eye level it almost looks like a jetty.

Im pretty sure that's been there a while. You can even go to it by car I think? I know that it is accessible by foot. There are so many little places way back in there it's pretty cool. The south bay is so diverse and there really is some places down there that are untouched.

Reallly shallow out there, especially during low tide.

Are you saying you can fish that area from shore, I've never fished South Bay and I keep hearing more and more SB, SB

If you are talking about the last pics, it's been there for ages. It separated the cool water intake and warm water outlet for the power plant that was demolished about 6 years ago.

I'm not sure if you can access it from shore without hopping a fence, but I'd at least like to check it out via kayak. Something tells me it's some kind of bird sanctuary, but I have no idea.

I fished that place for years. The west side finger that points south is a great bonefish area, and I see the for-hire flyfishing guides bringing clients there all the time, It's been there since at least the 70's - or even earlier. Can't be reached by shore pounders, as it's in the fenced off area that used to be the power plant.
Last time I fished there I talked to a guy out there in a truck, he was surveying crow traps because it is a bird santuary. This pic is me sitting on the north side of the island (J street launch is back there behind me) working my way around to the good bonefish area on the outside. None to be had on the flyrod that day...

I had many different jobs with the company that I worked for SDG&E before my last job as an electrician.
I was an operator at the Liquefied Natural Gas plant just south of the power plant. In November/December the Jack Crevalle would arrive at the beginning of the hot water discharge trapping the Mullet there. I'm looking for a picture of one that I caught, this was in the early 70's. There was a gate and road going to the island.
For all of us conspiracy theory people here, it could be a secret Chinese base built there.

I tried for years to catch one of those - cleaned up on the big needlefish though...
If you worked there, you may remember the greenhouses at the foot of the warm water discharge where they were researching the viability of growing market shrimp in the first two settling ponds. That was my dads operation, and I spent many a weekend there targeting the exotics in the warm water...

That area use to have giant turtles (tortoise?) One of them scared the heck out of my girlfriend on her kayak and I didn't believe her story until I googled it. I wonder if they are still there.
