Well beautiful morning in the valley, cool and no wind.
Started shooting a few minutes before 6 o clock. Euro doves, not alot of birds in the valley at feed lots, so we started with plan B, shot north of brawley for 3 hours two of us got 41 birds. Not bad.
We did see alot of white wing, you really need to look at the wings or your shooting the wrong bird.square tails on each.
I should of started sooner trying to get some lead shot, but fishing has been good too, to many choices.

There getting harder to come by, south of hwy 8 is where we hunt but the solar has taken a toll.
We have a farmer that let's us hunt after the opener, family and close friends first. He plants for pheasant , to have nesting spots, and milo for the dove.
Milo is almost unheard of now in the valley, cotton and melons too.
It's all about the alfalfa going world wide. Talked to a Japanese guy on a cruise he heard of imperial valley because they buy alfalfa.

Unless you have some undisturbed heavy cover you can’t have nesting pheasants. Asparagus fields used to provide that but it went by the wayside due to highs costs of labor to harvest.

Cotton isn’t grown because it is too expensive to treat for insects.

Milo yields were always a risky business due to the weather when the milo was flowering but sure was great for gamebirds and waterfowl. Only 90 acres currently planted. When the plant breeders developed a desert variety of Durham Wheat, that took over because the yields were predictable and there was a bigger demand but acreage is still driven by the price per bushel you can contract for before planting. It hasn’t been cost effective for some time.

Watermelon acreage is down 50% this year but cantaloupe acreage is up 3%. That acreage doesn’t change much year to year.

Alfalfa acreage used to be dependent on the price of milk but many dairies are moving out of the Chino Valley so acreage has fallen. It peaked in 1991 at 205,000 acres. Dropped to 180,000 acres by 2002. Hit bottom in 2008 at 98,000 acres but has remained pretty steady at 135,000 to 138,000 acres from 2009 until now. Only 15% is exported. The rest goes to the dairies in Chino Valley and for horse feed.

The new crop in Imperial Valley is industrial hemp. Same as marijuana but without the high levels of THC. Currently you can’t irrigate it with water from the Colorado River (Federal project) unless it is classified as a educational field trial or for other scientific research. So only 980 acres are planted currently. If they get the law straightened out they are estimating 19,000 acres by this time next year and much more if they can find investors to build a processing plant.
