    Hi

    My name is Luca and I come from Italy...
    I moved here in California ( Orange County) three years ago.

    As many European anglers I am crazy for fishing carp.

    I love use float technique and method feeder...

    I noticed that in some lake is prohibited use sweet corn and chumming...
    Is a state rule or is just lake regulation???

    How is possible fishing carp without chumming???

    Chumming is illegal in most CA bodies of water, but feeding the ducks the day before, is perfectly legal. Follow-up with a big rig of packbait.

    Chumming is illegal almost everywhere in California (freshwater, in the salt it's ok). Chumming for carp is illegal everywhere, period. There are ways around this, like pack and stick bait, Pva bags/tubes etc. Pain in the ... is what it is though

    The only chumming in freshwater is in the Colorado river district and only approved baitfish can be used.

    The massive chumming used in Europe is a no go.

    Pack bait is the way to go. It's not totally clear if it's strictly legal but carp are considered trash fish here, and I don't think anyone really cares.

    Regs say you can't use corn but you can at Morena because it's a listed bait on their page. And, yes, Morena has hungry ducks by the T dock. Also tons of carp. I fished carp once there and didn't chum and caught one on a piece of shrimp...so.

    Corn is legal bait everywhere, fresh and salt, from what I can tell, it is not listed as illegal bait anywhere I can find in any of the regulations I am aware of. Btw, caught a baby carp on shrimp earlier today... Lol

    Challenge anyone to quote the DFG rule on corn. The only mention I found is chumming with corn is legal only in the Salton sea.

      I used it in the late 80's and early 90's.

      Apparently it is legal. Here is the section on bait in the regulation. It is not legal to chum with corn anywhere except the Salton Sea. That was the only mention of corn when I did a search of the Adobe Reader version of the regulation. (Way too much time on my hands.)

      4.00. Bait-General.
      Legally acquired and possessed invertebrates, mollusks, crustaceans, amphibians (except salamanders), fish eggs and treated and processed foods may be used for bait, except:
      (a) No species specified as endangered, threatened, candidate, fully-protected, or otherwise protected under state and federal law may be used as bait.
      (b) No salamander may be used as bait. See section 5.05 for other amphibians that may be used as bait.
      (c) See Section 5.35 for restrictions on crayfish;
      (d) See Section 7.50(b)(74) for restriction on bait collecting in Hat Creek;
      (e) No trout may be maintained or possessed in a live condition in any container on or attached to any boat;
      (f) Except for restrictions listed under special regulations, dead ocean fish may be used as bait statewide. This section supersedes the provisions of sections 4.10, 4.15, 4.20, 4.25 and 4.30.

    I don't know if I was told about the corn thing (I think I was) or if I read it somewhere. But I'm glad it's not actually a thing.

    Thanks guys

    Now I have a good view about how to fishing carp here in USA....

    Hope I can catch some in future...

    One mont ago I was at Dixon lake but I got only a 4 lbs catfish ( and not really healthy).

    That lake has to much algae and vegetation, that rangers told me that is so because the water temperature is high now ( about 80 degrees )...
    Is that true???
    Because if is so is better try to catch some carp in fall and winter...
    Has the same problem the others lakes around there???

    Luca1980 , Henshaw, Morena and Hodges are all loaded with carp (Sutherland is too, but closed right now). Might be a bit of a drive, could be worth it for you though. If you're up for a drive, the Colorado River and Imperial Valley are loaded with carp, some huge ones in the mix. My personal best carp came from the IV decades ago, a shade over 19 kilos. Those giant carp are mostly gone, but very nice fish to 30 lb or more can still be had (bigger at the river). Pack bait is your friend, or Pva bags. Change your bait often and you will catch the crud out of them

    Luca,
    Carp are generally not targeted by anglers out here. Considering the free reign carp anglers have in Europe you will feel like your hands are tied here to not chum. You have to adapt.

    As has been said pack baits is the closest thing that is legal.

    Got any ideas for a pack bait that can hold together in fast current? The Imperial valley is mostly fast current.

    BTW Grass carp cannot be kept anywhere in the state. Commons and Mirrors are fine.

    Thanks spideyjg

    I understood and I am more than glad to adapt my fishing way to the California rules.

    Yes I think that with the method feeder and using “ rice powder” which can make the pack baits more hard to be removed from the feeder I will be able to fishing in fast current.....
    but my another concerning is about fishing in lakes where there are many algae and vfishing egetation.... so we can not let our bait stay down in the bottom but we probably need to use “pop up” boiles or floating pellet as bait

    Thanks Werfless

    I don’t really care about fish size....
    Normally I use light equipment so even I catch a 1 lb carp it could be funny....
    Thanks again

    Or just throw your gear in your car and come up here. Morena has healthy fish and it's cheap and uncrowded to fish here.
