I plan on renting a skiff on Monday and want to bring back some meat for the freezer. I have a pregnant wife at home and I can't seem to find any conclusive information online as to what we can safely eat out of MB. Everything I find has to do with the big bay which I know is much "dirtier" in terms of fish quality.

I'd appreciate any help I can get from you guys. Thanks

Go by the jetty next to Quivera, do the Werf special (shrimp on #6 hook). Rock wrasse, perch, croaker, etc etc, all good.

Spotties bad (rubbery) but fun to catch.
Halibut amazing but much harder to find.

Just get as close to the channel entrance on either side of the jetties. Like stated above, Calico, Sheephead, sargo, wrasse, croaker, bonito, macks, sandbass, rockfish. It’s the entrance to the ocean, so pretty much anything can come in lol. Bass seem like the most common catch at the moment. Ive been there a handful of times these past 2 weeks. Hit the north jetty towards the end of it, nice calico in that area. Definitely second the Shrimp on a dropper loop and small hooks.

This. I won't keep fish from the back bay but up near the entry channel is good I think. I've eaten plenty of fish from that area and have not mutated yet...

I'd imagine a garibaldi would taste better than a spotty at any rate lol.

Realistically? Near the mouth of MB its all pretty much gonna be okay if its legal. Just... overly spice the batter for deep frying your spotty fillets to make them palatable lol. Anything else? Probably pretty good.

I know we’re not suppose to catch Garabaldi, but have you tasted them, how do they taste?

Not to be a downer but if your renting a skiff to fill up on edible fish, it might not work out. You'd have better luck fishing off the rocks like the other guys mentioned. If you find a school of mackerel you are set for a fish fry. Make sure you have an ice box or bag to bleed and ice whatever you want to eat.

Small hooks, pieces of shrimp, any of the front rock or jetty areas, hospitality, main channel, etc.. sargos, blacksmith, kelpfish, calicos, sculpin, halfmoon all edible. Troll cranks around the barge, see if some legal cuda or bonito are lurking. Use shrimp chunks on bottom for the YFC when they are around...

Also, familiarizing yourself with rock angling will benefit you in 1 January through 31 March when shore anglers may legally keep members of the RCG (rockfish, Cabezon, Greenling) complex, but divers and boat anglers may not. Rockfish are delicious, sculpin being my favorite so far.
