Every once in a while (very rare) the bait barges will have some live squid. Otherwise, you have to catch it yourself.

Shoot. That's not the answer I was looking for.
    :(
What else works well in the kelp beds?
I'm going on my bro's boat tomorrow but I keep getting stuck in the kelp with lures!

Dude get a bucket of Unigoop drop it in a bag in the kelp and hang on for the time of your life.

You could get yourself some frozen squid and Yo Yo it down under the boat, I've done this and it works very well.

    Looks pretty cool!
I just saw a youtube video of the stuff.
Where can I get it and how much $$?
Would this work well with flylining?

If you have a bait in the water and there is Unigoop around, yes flylining will work.

What you are doing is called setting up a Chum slick. This if you are drifting, that slick will start from where your drift started and end at the boat. If you notice on the sports boats the guys that are throwing bait out, they are making a chum slick to bring the fish up.

    This stuff rocks man.

    Got it.
I thought Catalina Offshore Products was for the live squid.

I can't WAIT to try this!
    I'll post my results.
So, just hang the bag in the water with a rope then?

This board is a little too obsessed with Jetty Worms and Unigoop--also with people very new to saltwater fishing giving out tons of advice (see the thread on n yellowtail equipment).

If you are fishing the kelp you need to consider water color and current. You want blue or a clean green and a current that is not out to sea. Anchor in a kelp pocket so kelp is on two sides of the boat. Pick up anchovies at the receiver--they will probably sell you a 'yak scoop. You can chunk dead anchovies to create a chumline. Yes, Uni-goop works, and yes calicos and lings are caught on TWJs, but an anchovie is the way to go at La Jolla...

Use google and do some reading:
    search....

flyline, collar-hooking, calico bass, sabiki rig, etc...

If you see a large white boat with 80+ people on it anchored up, please don't drive up right behind it. You are costing me money.
