Big sardines work good for me, but the bite was so wide open I think you could have used anything

Chunk the sardines if the dodos are small.

Yeah, my buddy runs a charter. He says they were holding sardines in their hands over the rail and the dorado were picking them out of their hands .sounds like the great dorado fest of 2006 when they were hanging on every marlin jig within 5 min of setting.

It's looking to get even more wild with this new upcoming tropical storm. If it holds up it will be pushing more warm water to us along with tonnage of dorado.

Ok guys sorry I’m late, but better late than never I guess. The day started at 4am and we chose to go north, when the sun was up we were searching for kelp pattys, we found out first one just after sunrise and saw dorado jumping and chasing bait, we tryed live lined sardines, and jigs without success, and 3 or 4 boats came up on us so we decided to look for a more eager group(we figured the action was going to be fast and furious or not at all) it took a hour or two to find another, but same deal jumpers, and no biters, we trolled around hoochis and cedar plugs till around the Oceanside area (about 7 or More miles offshore, not quite sure to be honest) looking for patty’s as we went, only found 1 along the way and it was packed with like 15 boats, no one was catching any from our observations, but we heard over the radio that they were keyed in on micro bait / jigs -exactly what we didn’t have (on the bait we got from the barge, it was the best bait I think I’ve ever fished with, when we were livelining, if we let it, it would spool us. Anyway we went further out to sea and try’ed a few spots…. No fish, eventually we made the decision to make our way back, at this point we made it to Dana pt north wise, we trolled and looked for patty’s along the 9 with no luck, long story short we burnt 200gals of diesel, and only caught sunburns. We talked to some fishermen that also tryed Sunday and they skunked too, sounds like it was a combo of luck and not having small bait / lures. I’ll be interested to see how Mikey did (Sdfishandsips) we heard he was out there over the radio.

I don’t know what to say, just sucks, I’ve never caught anything offshore so i missed my chance. Now it looks like I somehow biffed the best offshore fishing in years.

It's too bad it didn't come together for you. We have all been there, and that fuel bill adds insult to injury but that's fishing.

Send me a message before you go out again. I can give you some good info or coordinates to start at first. You can also roll with me if you don't get seasick on a 17' CC. They are still in massive numbers out there and with them are still some better grade yellowfin & bluefin.

Always gotta have micro jet heads on board or micro hoochies for emergency. I remember one year, albacore were thick and couldn’t get them to go. We had a short bite and got one on the slide. Cut it open, bait in the gut was micro. Dug in the drawers, pulled out some micro feathers, literally 1-2”. First pass on the sonar, every rod doubled over. It was like that for limits. It’s hard to plan ahead but you gotta be ready.

When the dodos are on the micros, try a small lead head on a bass rod with a curly tail grub. 2-3” It works

Hey, that would be awesome I don’t think my friend plans on taking it out anytime soon (3-4 times every year type deal.) I don’t get seasick, maybe Dm me next time you need a partner.
