That is a big damn tooth that guy had in his hand. That said, their report of what happened sounds very much like what I have seen and heard of GWS behavior. Shark sees something, shark puts mouth on said object, object does not feel familiar to shark, shark lets go and leaves. Follows the pattern, hoax or not. A shark mouthing an object behaves VERY differently than one in active feeding mode.

They didn’t even have chum or bloody fish on the yak. Just out for a paddle. Pretty crazy.

This isn't the first report of a GW biting a kayak at Catalina.

There was a report a few years back of a lady who was kayaking around and a GW striking the kayak in the middle from underneath. There actually may be video of the people talking about the event on one of the Stoked on Fishing shows since it was the guys wife that owns that huge Mikelson Yacht that has been seen on their show several times.

I've read that certain colors attract sharks attention. Can't remember if it's red or yellow.

As they say on BD, "Pics, or it didn't happen." After pics are too easily dismissed. Need a pic in mid-chomp.

They said it was an estimate form the width of the bite. I tend to believe it!

Agreed, and like Werf said, the teeth are pretty damn massive to boot. Tooth would be on my necklace ( if I ever wore one ). Or on my hat that I rarely wear. ( skin cancer head me ).

I promise that was not a 19' shark. If it had been that big the bite would have been about 3' across. With a 20" bite this shark was likely 10-12'. The "19' shark" is probably just exaggerated from the kayakers. I've worked with these animals a lot and they always look bigger once you actually see them. People will hear "10' shark" and not realize how big that actually is.

19' would be longer than most of our Bass Boats! Yeah, seems that could eat a kayak! Most of my Bass are much bigger in the water than they are on the deck! Shrinkage!

Yea about average male. Really big shark for SoCal though, once they get that size they're usually down in Mexico at Guadalupe or up near San Fran eating seals and sea lions. The ones we usually get down here are juveniles eating our tuna and yt. More and more big ones showing up will probably mean less dawgs...not gonna complain :)

Would’ve liked to see some pictures of the damage to the yak. Yeah, have to admit I’m kind of surprised the yak wasn’t more visibly damaged by a bite that would embed two large teeth in it.

When I was divemastering the multi day dive boats we were once chased out of Ship Rock by a big great white. Exact same location that this happened at. Size might be an exaggeration, but I don't doubt the story. Cool souvenir though...

Your Female sharks are bigger then the the male sharks. This applies to great whites as well. If I had money on what this Shark was doing, it was probably making its rounds from Guadalupe to Monterey and Farrallon island... and then makes its loop back down to Hawaii and repeat that little process. SoCal is a birthing area on top of a much larger “food highway” that great whites travel on.
