After much debate it seems we need some 3rd party insight. So at the V on Thursday @PBandJellicles basically forced me to try his new spinning rig. This is how it went down: he rigs and casts the rod and then hands it over to me. I start working the bait (with my magic touch :) ), after roughly a minute of twitching this rod with extreme precision I hook up on a nice bass. @PBandJellicles witnesses and demands his pole back, I ofcourse refuse and reel in the bass. So the question becomes whose fish is it? (Opinions, satire and criticism is welcome)

Who ever hooks it caught it. Unless its for a young one then you tell em great job ! So they want to go fishing again instead of playing video games.

Your fish technically. Would you have caught it if you didnt use his set up? Not really a debate here. You caught a fish using your friends set up. That simple. Would be the same thing if you reached down and grabbed one of the other persons combo and got a fish.

Should have given him the rod when he demanded it. At that point you could have formulated an appropriate story; something like: "My buddy was having trouble getting bit, so I took his rod, hooked a fish for him and gave to back to him. He was really glad I helped him finally catch a fish!"

It's a shared fish, belongs to no one. Kind of like a hook and hand or when you pass the rod to someone else to finish bringing the fish in.

To me......it is your fish. You worked the lure and your technique helped trigger the fish to bite.
It is sometimes interesting how someone could be using the same exact lure but yet the other person will be catching more fish on it. It's technique and experience mostly.....and that is the key. A couple decades ago my friend John used to swear that I had certain oils (me being Italian ;)and him being Irish)on my hand that made the fish bite the plastic worms I put on my hook when we fished together. It was funny because we would be using the same exact's worm color and set up.( of course not so funny for him )

I have an Italian friend - he catches way more than I do - and I could be fishing 20' from him - I always wondered about the oils on the hand.

This question reminds me of time I was fishing with my dad - it wasn't that long ago, so I wasn't a little boy. We both had our lines out soaking - he went for a walk to...?? whatever... His rod starting moving - so I grabbed it and reeled in the fish.

Improper lending of gear penalty for your friend for asking for it back, he gets awarded a 2 minute penalty. You landed a fish not on your gear so the fish doesn't count in the formal friendly standings but can be used in event of a tie. Additional rules may be created without the consent of all parties as long as it favors yourself.

Shared fish.... he made the cast and did the retieve. Without his cast you have no fish and without your retrive or technique he has no fish. Its a team effort and team fish... :):):):)

Actually @Linebig's answer of shared fish is the most logical answer and the best way to settle it:), especially if it is a small bass or if you guys are just counting how many fish you each caught.....but if it is a :eek:pig, the game(dispute):( may go on for quite a while is my guess.

I think the fact you guys were in YOUR boat is the tie breaker.

    Cheers

    Name:
    Jason
I kinda go by the "Fishermens creed"

"This is my fishing pole. There are many like it, but this one is mine..... My pole is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my pole is useless. Without my pole, I am useless. I must cast my pole true."

My rods name's are Janet, Shirley, Kathy and Stella... If I ask for my rod back, give it back!!! LMAO!

In all seriousness. You hook it, it's your fish.. Never lend your pole out when it's in the water!

The person who hooked it. The only scenario I can see is if, one person casts a bait out. Puts it in holder soaking a bait. Pole gets bit, asks you to hand over pole.

In your scenario you worked the lure, hooked it.....it's yours!

    My 2 cents
