I can barely navigate through the forums anymore because there’s a banner ad at the top, bottom, and center of the screen on every page. Is there a way to disable it? It’s a little much...

You can turn ad blocker on in your browser settings.

The ads may be annoying, yes. However, I'd assume the revenue generated by hosting the ads is what makes this site/forum a free service for all of us users. Hopefully, Kellen can chime in and elaborate on this.

My ad blocker is turned on. That’s the first thing I checked

I def get that, and one ad per page is not an issue at all but more ads than content is nuts. I’ve bought several shirts and helped support this website because I like it but this many ads makes it difficult to tolerate.

Agreed, it is frustrating when viewing the site on my phone as well. During the day it's on my PC so the ads aren't as obnoxious.

Thanks for the feedback. This is Google's new "auto ads" feature that we're trying out.

I know ads can be frustrating, and we try to keep them at a tolerable level. I also understand for some users, there will be too many ads. Its a balance.

Truth is though, with everyone switching to mobile and using ad blockers, free sites like sdfish.com are probably destined to go away or forced to change to pay only formats. If this auto ads feature that Google is rolling out isn't a good solution for us, we'll probably switch to a subscription service. Revenue is way down over the last few years, despite all measurable stats being way up. So something will have to change.

Running a site like this is a full time job, and it definitely doesn't pay like it.

I do very much appreciate those of you users who don't use ad blockers, and not only tolerate the ads, but click on ones that interest you. You guys are the reason SDFish is still here.

I click on some of the ads that interest me. But why do I get ads for women's sexy under garments? LOL

Lord knows I fat-thumb ads all the time on my phone while at work. Funny thing being the ads I get tend to be for products I stock at work. Creeepy AF. That said, sdfish is the only site I don't run adblocker on for a reason. I don't mind the ads too much, so *shrug*

    Hey Kellen,

Are you allowing any other ad exchanges besides Google to run on here?

It does not matter how many times you click on "stop seeing this ad". They say they will try to not show it again, but they lie!

Might be a way to boost ad revenue. I worked on yield optimization for a publisher and we got our reminante rate up from .02 to .35 in about 14 months.

Yeah I explored some other networks in the past. It can boost revenue a bit, but then adds in other networks with their specific policies. For instance I opt out of several sensitive ad categories because some users here do not like them. Google does a pretty good job of facilitating that, but other networks not as much.

Also adding other networks means slower page load times.

All in all, Google pretty much dominates the market anyways so it does a good enough job by itself.

The dip in revenue is mostly attributed to the rise in mobile popularity, where ads simply aren’t as effective. And then the proliferation of ad blockers.

I don’t think there’s any question that free web content is on the way out in general because of these things.
