Wasn’t the most ideal conditions out there but wasn’t gonna turn around after making the drive.

Stuck to the plan with a wee bit of adjustments. Murky brown water meant stepping slowly and carefully out in the grounds.

One false step and you may trip over the terrain.

One wrong move and you’ll step into waist high+ water.

Wind was blowing hard. Had to cast at 10’o clock to get a shot of landing in the money zone at 2 or 3 o’clock.

With the preliminary work out of the way, will there be someone home?

“BOOM” like the vibrato of great John Madden, one slammed the hook and it all worked out this time.

    That's a hog!
    Nicely done.
Man I've got to learn that fishery. I've only ever caught one and that was by accident.
    Best regards!

Sounds like you won't be around, but we might be on the hunt tomorrow evening...

Some good people on these boards. When you're ready to put the grandkids on a few and you are up for a bit of a drive, hit me up.

I think you just took all the wind out of my sails for even trying for a calico. Great catch!

I’m sure, never targeted bass in the surf so I’m not really in the know of their whereabouts other than outside flat rock

Well I guess a trip to Cedros is in order. Island beaches still count right?

    Thanks Werf.
I'll start the grand kids on something more local and less technical. They need some basic skills and to learn situational awareness. Unfortunately, they have none.
As far as driving for fish, totally, though I'm still focused on learning the local north county scene as well. That being said, I can also foresee a trip to the desert eventually. But that's a ways offf.
    Congrats again Scuba!
Werf good luck on your upcoming hunt.
    Best regards.

I wasn't thinking quite that far, more like mission bay hunting some big smelt or some salema (free bait), or soak some ghost shrimp for some panfish... Lol. The desert is not for faint of heart or will, it's an amazing place though

    Bassnbeans Werfless Thanks you guys.

dj thrillz Don’t discount the beaches at Sunset Cliffs and LJ.

Werf documented a very nice sand bass at SSC that could’ve easily been a calico since both species roam that area.

Good luck out there for those in the hunt.

jjdbike You are definitely on the right track. The difficult part is finding someone home once you have identified the right structures. Success is within the near future given your grit and persistence.

skrilla Good to know that we’ve a fine fishery right at the surf.

Roncador Thanks man. You, DJ and Eg3210 were with me. :emoji_wink:

That beast must have been a fun fight in the surf. Glad we could be there with you for that, in spirit anyway

I won’t discount any beach. I just do not target them therefore I do not know what or where is best.

Yea, I wish there was one best what and one best where that’s applicable for everyone and for all circumstances. A magical destination and method per se to catch calico bass or any desired fish every time.

As you know, there are so many variables involved in fishing and specifically surf fishing.

I am working on something that will help you and other interested anglers to formulate their own sensible approach to catching calico bass in the surf based on the individual’s situation. IE: beach conditions, their fishing experiences, comfort level and personal preferences.

The “Low Tide Revolution”. It’ll provide clarity and a solid foundation to what you are seeking.

    Stay tuned!

Haha, nice. Honestly, I’m not too interested in calicos from the surf, but since I created the side pot…. Wanted to try. After seeing your fish I don’t wanna try anymore lol. But the information that you will eventually provide will definitely help some others out I’m sure. Looking forward to the read tho ;)
