I'm new to the scene(2 yrs) so, I'll tread lightly on this...I'm not trying to start an internet fishing forum argument, just standing on my soap box for a minute.

Ok, so I have a slight annoyance that keeps popping up here and there and as I go fishing with new people and watch videos and such of guys catching fish in the area.... after they catch the fish.... I'm hearing this high pitched ...

"Yewwwww!"....... like a little bird or calf elk, or something of baby animal sound of sorts, maybe even a dolphin...

I also hear a high pitched "Wooooeww"

I realize these are excited post catch noises. All very necessary, I completely agree..... but "Yewwwww!"??...... Really? Really SoCal?? That's what the Pacific SW region has come up with for there post catch call??
I generally have not heard it in other regions......

I mean, for me personally - when a fish hits and hooked, its - "FISH ON!" and when I've landed a good fish its - "F YA!" (Fist pumps, etc. ....full word version of the F) Probably not better by any means, especially around young ears. But my old ears are not handling the higher octave stuff either.

All IMO and on my soap box!

    Can't vote for either one.
I go with "all right" or just "yeah"

Just act like you've been there before. I hear the yells all across the lake for that first 3 lb bass! Save it for the DD!

Man, I say that since most folks are fishing because it is fun and makes them happy then whatever joyful noise they want to make is their business. Personally, I am not much of noise maker but that is because I have this hang up instilled by my grandfather that being loud will scare the fish. However, if people are having fun and get excited, good for them!

I think "yeeeewwww" extends well outside of SoCal since I hear it a lot skating, mountain biking, skiing. Surfers say it too. Outside of fishing, it's mainly reserved for when you or a friend gets sendy and does something awesome, preferably on camera. I'll have to do some digging, but I know I have tons and tons of clips from ski season where plenty of "yeewww"s, "hell yeah"s, and other exciting sounds can be heard in the background.

Maybe your rt Carterantebi. It does fit for snow skiing and I could see it go for surfing too. I know I've experienced your 'yewww' I think on a short clip I watched. So to that, I say - thank you for your reply, I certainly respect and appreciate your opinion! :)

My pronunciation must be off on this word. I am hearing the word that little girls say when they encounter a squashed snail.

I'm not sure which beaches you surf at, but you'd be laughed off the break if you made that girly sound! Especially PB to Oceanside! Maybe that's an IB surfer sound since I won't surf there for fear of TJ river pollution and hypodermic needles???????

Perhaps a sound bit or your rendition of that sound as the spelling may be off!

    LOL!

I didn't surf a whole lot this year since I was too busy fishing but I'm occasionally at IB (not so much anymore), Silver Strand, Tourmaline, LJ, Del Mar, and Cardiff for the most part.

Sometimes it's more of a "you" sound, sometimes more like "yo" and every once in a while it's closer to a "yeah!"

    I'm a dead silent "catcher"..
It's when I miss'em or they break off... It's not real hard to tell what I'm saying when that happens.

Fellas, I think you are "barking" up the wrong tree! What you have here are two spanglish words. Let me translate.
Yeeeewwww- Man that burrito smelled better going in!
Wooooewww- that smells worst than the "Yeeewwww"!

Wow I went through some laughs on my way down. I heard "yeeeeeww" first from my cousin who is a skateboarder. So in my mind I've generalized the sound with skateboarders. Obviously, its usage extends way beyond just them.

But what's up with "yeet". On social media I've been seeing it in the comments everywhere. Yeet? Like what is that even?

For me I yell: "Its about time!" when I catch a fish - and usually said to myself - no one hears it.
