Fished the Apollo yesterday 9-12-19. It was tough all day then that "One Last Stop" you always pray for happened!

20# Flouro, Size 8 hooks! Dorsal Fin hooked Sardines. It made all the difference!

No jigs. Use Bait. These were some picky fish!

It means the water is green and I don’t like small hooks, so I’m goina fish stuff that bites 4/0 and 40lb.

Size 8? I don't think I've ever seen a tuna style hook in size 8. Obviously there's a lot of variation between manufacturers' sizes and designs. The Gamakatsu live bait hooks in a size 2 could pass for an Owner hook in size 8, but I am actually curious about what #8 hook you used! :)

    BTW, nice fish! :)

Haven't seen any Guadalupe reports from you...
Only tuna around is in the green water, the long range fleet is even fishing in it...
Concentration of cows at Clemente canyon has also moved on for the most part.
You must be fishing an area that the best of the best doesn't even know about!
    You're awesome!

Maybe I’m fishing hard foamers with the right bait... maybe I’m fishing clean warmer water... maybe I’m fishing strictly smaller poppers and big surface irons at the slowest pace possible. Maybe I’m fishing a different zone entirely. Maybe I’ve even fished a patty for some dorado recently. None of y’all know for sure I know that.

4/0. I can see the #40 but 4/0. Hmm. Them be kinda tiny sardines out there. A 4/0 would seem to send those little fish rocketing straight down faster than any belly hook would.

But there's a ton of ways to fish for those tuna. And as long as you've figured out something that works for yourself, and as long as I always say, "You don't mess it up for the other guys on the boat." That's all that really matters. Fish whatever you want to and have figured out.

But honestly, Fat Spottie, if I had a bunch of money to bet on who could bring in the heaviest limit in on a day of fishing, you with your #40 and 4/0 or on me with much lighter gear on the current class of mostly #10-100 fish within the next week or two, I would bet on myself each and every time. :) Just good natured trash talking.

Most if the stuff I’ve been fishing is not what I would consider local waters. If you where going to play the game of local waters, you will probably have the upper hand, considerably. With the stuff I’ve been fishing in a different zone... well we would both have our limits. Only difference is that I would have mine in faster. I’ve been using small mackerel as well... not sardingus.

I went out yesterday and it was a tough day for the boat and the fleet. I got one YFT on 15# with a size 4 hook.

Lots of bait is beat up and bloody. Many of the clean looking ones don’t swim well so you gotta go through bait like it’s speed dating. If you get bit, it’s within 15 seconds of hitting the water. No long soak.

At this point in the season most of the sporties are using bait that has been cured for only a day or so... just enough to sort out the ones that die from being harvested. The stuff that has been cured for a couple of days is reserved for the big boats.. Excel, AA, Indie, Intrepid, Royal Polaris, you get the idea.

What brand hooks are y’all using?

    Here’s my result from a #2 Owner, 60# braid, 17# mono leader.

Just glad my knots held up, :emoji_joy:

FS has this offshore thing on lock, didn’t you know?! There are still some noobs on this board that he hasn’t enlightened. People who fish offshore a few times a year can really learn something from his insightful comments. Maybe with the same number of fishing days a year and a real dedication to the gospel of FS, they can strive to be half the fisherman he is. That’s my goal!
