Because of San Diego's generally warm climate, water temperatures in our reservoirs do not support Rainbow Trout year-round. However, during the fall and winter months almost every lake in the County begins stocking rainbows in their water. With several sources to acquire these trout, a variety of options are available depending on the lake. Lately, the Nebraska variety of Rainbow has been the vogue target. Poway Lake, and Lake Miramar among others stocked these full-tailed and powerful version of Rainbow.
Other stocking sources offer larger fish, some exceeding 15 pounds to become a future catch-of-a-lifetime. Lake Cuyamaca is the only lake in San Diego to receive year-round trout stocks, their mountain elevation and cool water is condusive to Rainbow Trout and can sustain them through the Summer.
