A shore fisherman caught a massive 32.11 pound striped bass at Diamond Valley today, January 18th. The angler, Jesse Santana was using a Savage Gear swimbait. The catch falls just short of the 34.77 pound striper caught in April of 2012 by Nhan Doan of Los Angeles, which stands at the current Diamond Valley Lake Record for striped bass.
Santana apparently had no idea how close the fish was going to be to the lake record. “I didn’t know it was a lake record contender, I wouldn’t have kept fishing for two more hours or bled it out before I walked it back,” he commented on the Diamond Valley Marina facebook page. There is no way to know whether or not it would have surpassed the lake record had he weighed it immediately after catching it, but it certainly would have been closer.
