I took a client from Switzerland, Jerome, out to El Capitan on Sunday to show him the bass fishing San Diego is known for. The water temperature is sitting right below 60 still, at about 59 degrees most places on the surface. So there are male bass up on the bank already, but the larger females are starting to move up.
I started out the day introducing him to a few different baits and techniques like swimbaits, tail spins, wacky rigs, jigs, drop shots and texas rigs. Our first bite came on the drop shot, so we narrowed our focus down to fishing plastics and getting Jerome some bites.
We ended up getting 11 keepers on the day, coming on carolina rigs, drop shots and texas rigs. Those fish averaged 2.5 to 3 pounds. Jerome also landed a chunky catfish that bit the drop shot.
