The 87 anglers checked at Lower Otay last week reported catching 243 largemouth bass, 15 bluegill and 6 crappie. San Diego fishing guide Tom Lowery (tomloweryfishing.com) reports a very good bass bite at Lower Otay in deep water from 38-44 feet deep. Bass are still breaking the surface in the morning, but then schooling up on bait when the sun comes up. Lowery offers the following outlook, “they continue to feed on shad all winter long, find the bait and you will find the bass. Spoons, vertical drop shotting, and the alabama rig all got bit.”
The water level is 17.34 feet below spill. Launching conditions are good. The surface temperature is reported at 75 degrees, the same as last week.
Lower Otay is open on a Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday schedule with rental boats available on all three of those days, but be sure to call ahead to confirm (619)397-5212.
