  • TROUT: The Trout Opener is just 2 weeks away. The water temperature is slowly dropping due to the cooler nights and will reach 70 degrees or lower prior to opening weekend.

    Trout Opening Weekend is scheduled for November 7th and 8th. Lakes 2, 3 and 4 will share a 2,500 lb. stock of Rainbow Trout from Jess Ranch Trout Farm. This stock will be loaded with HUGE Trophy Trout into the double digits as well as tagged Trout for prizes! Prizes will also be awarded for the top 5 largest Trout caught over the 2 day event. Bring your catch to the Park Office to be weighed and photographed. Trout 5 lbs. and larger will qualify you for the April 1st Grand Prize drawing for a 2 night Cabin Vacation.

    BASS: The Bass bite was slow this past week. South lake 1 has produced some fish under 5 lbs. The islands on lake 5 have also been popular.

    BLUEGILL: The Bluegill are plentiful in all 7 lakes. Some giants have been spotted swimming near the dock on south lake 4.

    CATFISH: 24,000 lbs. of Catfish was stocked this year. The last stock was dumped into lakes 3 and 4 on October 16th.

    ** No California State Fishing License required to fish at Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve.

    Fishing Permit Fees

    • Adult (ages 16 and over) $9.00 per day
    • Junior (ages 7 to 15) $6.00 per day
    • Second fishing pole stamp $4.00
    • *One child under 7 may fish for free with a paid adult

    Santee Lakes is a small set of 7 man-made reservoirs in Santee, CA about 17 miles northeast of downtown San Diego. Rainbow trout are stocked heavily in the winter months, and channel catfish are stocked equally heavily the rest of the year.
