Lake Wohlford Fish Report – 12/9/17

  • Content Ad
  • Opening day of trout season was a success despite some strong winds out of the East. Some limits were reported early off Senior Shoreline and fish were being caught in Boat Dock Cove and the West Buoy Line. Inflated nightcrawlers, light colored jigs, and green powerbait all seemed to be working well. Often the key to success trout fishing is to keep your gear light: a size 14 treble hook, or smaller, and a leader line no heavier than 4 lb. test. Leaders should be kept short usually no longer than a foot. The trout from the new hatchery Calaveras Trout Farm are smaller on average than in years past, but seem full of vigor.

Largemouth bass can be found lurking around structure. With the addition of trout to the menu this an excellent time to be throwing those swimbaits in the hopes of landing a big one.

Crappie can be found in the early morning hours near the cover of shade or in rocky outcroppings. They respond best to finger jigs or live golden shiners.

    1. took 5 of my 6 grandkids to LW on 12/16/17. Headed to where I’ve always fished, about a 1/2 mile south of the Restaurant to the Parking lot then packed up 3 boys under 8 & 2 girls under 2 yrs old and started down the trail with 3 other adults. Was I in for a surprise as the entire lake is choked with cattails…Only one 30′ opening to fish from and there was a guy there…After wandering about aimlessly for 10 minutes toting all the gear needed for the kids and us, we decided to go elsewhere, however, the guy in the only spot around called out and asked if we would like the spot as he had to go to work. Heck yes, I was already exhausted…Thanks, buddy, you saved the day…Fished for 2.5 hours and all 3 of the boys caught a trout…all on nightcrawlers or 1/2 nightcrawler & only about 30′ from shore…took me awhile to dial that in. Many other bites, but as you can imagine, I had my hands full. Grandson without a fish was bummed as the ladies started packing up, but as I was reeling his rod in to leave, I stopped for a 2 count and was on…handed off the fish and Papa was a hero! Hard fighting fish…To bad about the shore access…hopefully some big rains will flood the cattails out.
