Weakley, of Escondido, is known best for his pursuit of the famous bass known as “Dottie” – he being the one who inadvertently foul hooked her when she weighed a verified 25 pounds in 2006. But Weakley is back in the headlines, capturing the lead in the biggest bass of the year race for San Diego.
He caught and released the season’s largest largemouth bass yesterday, at the famed Dixon. This bass was nearly 10 pounds lighter than the amazing “Dottie” – a testament to that freak of nature’s astonishing size.
In our “Trophy Bass Outlook for 2015” piece published a week ago, we suggested that Dixon could return as San Diego’s top dog for trophy bass because of how stable it has been in comparison to Miramar and Lower Otay, which have kicked out the majority of the big bass the last couple years.
Weakley caught the bass in Catifsh Cove on a jig while sightfishing for spawning bass. The bass was released.
