Big blue catfish were especially active this weekend as there were two over 35 pounds caught from the local lakes. We earlier reported on the new lake record blue catfish from Hodges caught on Saturday, and just got word of another big one of similar stature taken at El Capitan as well.
This one was slightly larger at 38.85 pounds, caught by Santee’s Pat McLaughlin while he was fishing for bass on Saturday, March 7th.
McLaughlin was fishing a plastic creature bait in the Boulder Bay Area around noon when he got the big bite. According to Chris McGill who sent the photos and report in, McLaughlin fought the fish for about 40 minutes before landing it.
Like the aforementioned fish from Hodges, this one was also released alive and well after being photographed and weighed at the dock.
But despite being larger, McLaughlin’s will fall short of being a lake record. El Capitan’s lake record for blue catfish was caught by Cameron Smith, also while bass fishing, at El Capitan in March of 2013 and weighed 48.25 pounds.
