Big fish headline trout opener at Santee Lakes

  • Santee Lakes kicked off San Diego’s trout season this past weekend as anglers from around Southern California stood shoulder to shoulder along the shorelines of the small chain of manmade lakes.

Prizes were awarded for the top-5 heaviest trout caught over the weekend, and additional prizes were given away for anglers that caught tagged trout.

Topping the weekend was James Leon who caught a 10 lbs. 7 oz. rainbow trout, earning the top prize of a new BMX bike. 2nd went to Brandon Avalos with an 8 lbs. 8 oz. trout which garnered a 3-person tent. David Ramirez  reeled in an 8 lbs. 6 oz. trout to take home a rod and reel package. An 8 lbs. 3 oz. trout caught by Jacob Saliphiw secured the angler a Plano Tackle Bag, and rounding out the top-5 was Joseph Ta with an 8 pounder, scoring Ta a $25 Mastercard gift card.

While there is no doubt still trout left from the initial stock, Santee Lakes will receive a fresh load of trout the week of November 16th.

To see other scheduled trout plants taking place in San Diego, check out our Future Trout Stocking Schedule. Future stocking dates will be added as that information is made available for Dixon, and other local area lakes so check back frequently.
