Don Gibson caught and released a 36.6 pound blue catfish on Saturday, breaking the previous record at Lake Hodges for blue catfish which has stood since July 13th, 2011. That fish weighed 29.8 pounds, so Gibson’s catch becomes the first blue catfish officially recorded at Hodges over 30 pounds.
In fact, Gibson’s fish is now the heaviest record catch there, exceeding the 35 pound channel catfish lake record which has stood since 1977.
Another big blue catfish was also caught on Saturday. Pat McLaughlin of Santee caught a 38.85 pound blue catfish from El Capitan.

Gibson caught his fish on a piece of mackerel, one of the most popular forms of bait for catfish fishing. And, a sign of Gibson’s respect for this fish, the fish was successfully released after being weighed and photographed.
