Redear sunfish record broken at Lake Murray

On June 30th we received a submission to our Big Fish List, a database of our member’s notable fish catches, for a 2.355 pound bluegill caught at Lake Murray that same day. A couple days later, I received a private message from a member (fishbreath) raising doubt to the species of the fish, stating he believed it to be a redear sunfish. Taking a second glance at the pictures that were included with the submission, the fish displayed several attributes of a redear sunfish, but also lacked the most obvious, the tell-tale sign of a redear, the red ear.

FINS is back with double the fun on June 22nd

The popular seminar series FINS (Fishing Instruction Night Series), put on by Anglers Marine the last couple summers will return in 2011 on Wednesday, June 22nd with not one, but two seminar speakers. Evergreen pro-staffers Justin Kerr and Shaun Bailey will conduct the season debut at Anglers Marine in Santee at 7 PM. As is the tradition, Anglers Marine will offer a free BBQ to guests beginning at 6:30 PM. A big raffle, with no doubt a ton of high-quality Evergreen tackle will be raffled off as well. But the real value is the opportunity to learn from the best, and Kerr and Bailey will divulge much of the information they’ve used and aquired as two of the top tournament anglers in the west.

Water level update from around the county

With the recent rains, I’m sure you’re curious what the water levels look like at your favorite lake. Notably, Loveland Reservoir, a popular bass lake that allows shore-fishing only has joined Barrett and Hodges as lakes exceeding their capacity and spilling over.

The most impressive jump was at Lake Morena, which up until this point had only risen a few feet since December when other lakes like Hodges and Sutherland jumped up over 20. But since February 28th, Morena has come up another 6.6 vertical feet and is now up 10.45 feet overall since December 13th. Its still extremely low at less than 25% full, but 10 feet is 10 feet.
