  • Helix Water District has announced a temporary closure of Lake Jennings to allow Scripps Institute of Oceanography to conduct a study on the reservoir.

    The lake will be closed to all fishing and boating activities from October 30th through November 16th. The lake will reopen for fishing on Friday, November 17th – which will also be the opener for their 2017/2018 trout season.

    Helix Water District released the following notice explaining the study;

    Lake Jennings Temporary Closure Notice

    October 30th through November 16th, 2017

    The Scripps Institute of Oceanography is working with Helix Water District to conduct testing to gather data to support development of a computer model that can be used to predict the hydraulic mixing actions within the lake. This data and model development will assist Helix in future studies at the lake.

    Scripps Institute of Oceanography will be using a dye that is approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as part of the testing process. It may be possible to see a slight color that can range from pink to red during the testing. The dye is not harmful and will dissipate over the testing period.

    What does this mean?

    • All lake activities will be closed during this period.
    • The campground will remain open with no fishing or boating access.
    • Helix will not use water from Lake Jennings as a drinking water supply during the testing period to limit any influencing hydraulic actions that taking water from the lake may have on the testing.

    Helix Water District and Lake Jennings apologizes for any inconvenience this closure may cause and we appreciate your understanding.
