Offshore report from Captain Clowers

  • Report for trips from July 20th through 29th: This is truly epic fishing right now for yellowfin tuna, yellowtail and dorado! For the last nine days in a row I have been blessed with good clients, fishing from 15 to 35 miles off Point Loma. Almost every day we have had limits of yellowfin. Some days we’ve also had limits of yellowtail and even dorado mixed in. Actually, I have been seeing a lot more dorado just the last few days. The tuna have come in between 20 and 50 pounds.

Some days we’re primarily getting them trolling, with bait fish following the stop. Other days its just kelp paddy fishing. And if you find the right one, you limit out off just that one. Two out of the last three trips we found that one epic paddy.

Three days ago it was all you want yellowtail, then the yellowfin showed up and it was as fast as you can get a bait in the water, you were bit. We plugged the boat with limits by 8:46 AM. The last few days the birds have really been working over breaking fish, so keep your eyes open for that.

What an exciting time we’re having experiencing this world class fishing right here in our backyard. The water temperature has been from 69 to 73 degrees. Bait has varied, some days only anchovies are available, but they’re still working. Typically, they have sardines available on the weekdays due to less boats going out.
