  • Michael Wood, the owner/operator of Buddy Boy Sportfishing came to the timely aid of a fellow fishing boat with 6 people onboard that was fully engulfed in flames and going down approximately 10 miles offshore.

The 40-foot “Reel Viking” caught fire due to an engine issue on their way out to the fishing grounds, and issued a distress call at approximately 8:30 AM.

Wood, on his way out saw smoke, and responded, beating USCG and SD Lifeguard response crews. He was able to safely offload all 6 onboard (4 passengers and 2 crew) before other help arrived, and well before the Reel Viking eventually succumbed to the flames and sank beneath the surface.

Wood chalked it up to being in the right place at the right time, sharing photos and a video on Facebook of the 40 foot sportfisher on fire.
