San Diego’s biggest bass of 2014

Mike Gilbert 12 pound bass

#14A – Mike Gilbert, 12.125 pounds

  • Where: Lower Otay Lake
    When: March 23rd, 2014

Mike Gilbert became a household name in the San Diego fishing community when he caught a 17 lb. 7 oz. bass at Lower Otay in February of 2013, one of the largest bass in the last decade in San Diego County.

But Gilbert’s 2014 season has proven he’s one of the county’s leading big bass anglers. He’s got all the tricks and has a flexible schedule that allows him to get out on the water during the weekdays. But he still has the drive to get out there and battle the crowds on the weekends.

This 12 lb. 2 oz. bass came on a Sunday on one of San Diego’s hottest lakes at the time, in the middle of March – the peak bass season. So he wasn’t alone out there that day, and he still popped one of the biggest bass of the season.

Unlike Gilbert’s other notable big bass catches (you’ll see a couple further up this list) which came on swimbaits, this was a “bed fish.”
