  • For the third month in a row, Kevin Norling leads Wade Strelic in our tournament angler power rankings on the strength of their 1st and 2nd place finishes in the HUGE night tournament fields early this year. The big night tournament fields continue to weigh heavily in the rankings, but results in the night tournaments alone don’t get you ranked here.

But those two better watch out for Mike Walsh, who is fishing better than anyone else in San Diego right now. Walsh remains in the #3 slot behind Norling and Strelic, but he is closing the gap. Walsh won another San Diego Team Day Series Tournament, his second in a row fishing with his wife Jennifer and has only finished outside the top 10 once out of the 8 tournaments he has fished this year. Norling’s 559 point lead over 3rd place Walsh shrunk down to 274 points this month, and if Norling trips up again, Walsh will probably be there to claim the top spot next month.

Tom Leedom, who finished last season 2nd in our computer rankings rose from 9th to 4th this month, based mostly on the anglers ahead of him last month struggling in June. Matt Menzel and Matthew Purcell, who have a couple 2nds in big points tournaments fishing together, are locked in a tie for 5th. They were previously unranked, but have now fished enough events (7) to meet the minimum required for our rankings.

    About the rankings

The SDFish.com Tournament Angler Computer Rankings are meant to quantify the success of an individual anglers tournament season. They are not based on opinion, or make any claim to decide who the best, or worst anglers are. They are based on an anglers’ performance, and their performance alone.

    Which anglers are considered?

All anglers who fish a minimum of 7 qualified local tournaments so far this season have been included for consideration, and the top 25 are posted above.

    Which tournaments are considered?

    How are the rankings formulated?

Each qualifying tournament is weighted based on the number of entries in the field. A proprietary formula awards points each finishing position for each individual angler (team tournaments score each angler independently) from the top down. Those points are then divided by the total number of tournaments an angler fishes, and a multiplier is applied to remove the decimals.

    2014 Season Rankings

Rankings will be updated throughout the year, and a new set of rankings will be published at the start of every month including all qualified tournaments from the start of the 2014 season (includes some tournaments from 2013) through the previous month. See our 2014 tournament schedule for a full list of tournaments that’ll be considered for the angler rankings, excluding the club level tournaments.
